Since they made the change that resulted in the SNAFU a few days ago, the
response from their server(s) has been very, VERY slow. A call for headers
from a single group, with perhaps 200 items, is truly GLACIAL.

Have you noticed the major slowdown?

Well, I only use the Cox news server(s) to read cox.* newsgroups.
Otherwise I use Novia. My nn newsreader isn't too terribly slow, but
I'm not reading high-volume newsgroups.

I found out, from the cox.* newsgroups, that Cox just recently
outsourced their news servers to Highwinds Media:

http://www.highwinds-media.com

Still, it seems that we are having an above-average number of switchover
SNAFU's. Especially for an outsourcing company that does such a good
job of tooting its own horn at the above web site.

Yes, and it's a common subject in the Cocks newsfroup newsfroup lately.
Supposedly "they" are looking at it.

I just found the group. Holy cow! Wotta bunch of flamers!! Sheesh!

I still marvel that some "official"-type people (developers, service
providers, etc) still have the nerve to "appear in public". They usually are
promptly flamed from all directions.

I appreciate that they are there and that the ones actually posting ARE NOT
the ones making high-level decisions.

I now have something new to read. I looks like it might be interesting.

Jim, Why do you use the competition at all?

Jim, Why do you use the competition at all?
I am about 1,000-ft too far out for Qwest DSL.

As for the (Qwest-billed) DirecTV, I'm reluctant: Due to my neighbor's tree,
the dish would have to be installed on the "cupola" atop my house (box-like
structure that houses the fireplace chimney and water heater vent).

I learned a long time ago that, if it took a ladder to INSTALL the [whatever],
it takes a ladder to access or work on that same [whatever]. Besides, the
shoddy work of the DirecTV installers I have seen was bad enough that I'm
pretty sure I don't even want them on my property, much less drilling holes in
my house and running wire. Well, you asked!
