For the first time since AkSarBen closed, I was on the old campus to
open up a new facility.
I had never been closer than 72nd street or Center street. It
especially bothered me to see the empty grandstand before it was razed
Very nice Marriott hotel.
And if they treat all their customers like they treated me, they will be
in business for a long time. I can't believe the attention and
accolades they showered upon me.
They hired me to blow "Call to the Post" to announce the beginning of
the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Perhaps you saw me briefly on Channel 7 10pm news.
Very nice campus going up. errr....IS up and going up. town homes,
apartments, university housing, Wohlners, is already open, as is the
Marriot. UNO has some classroom buildings.
I always felt the razing of AkSarBen was a backroom deal done with
dishonest people, like Mike Albert (hope I remember the name correctly)
who later served time for dishonesty in his business. If you are a
crook in business, it is likely you are a crook in public office, also.
I believe the plans for developing downtown and changing AkSarBen to
First Data, UNO and other businesses was in the works for years by
people who cooked up the plan in some smoke filled room, and likely made
money on the deal.
Do I have proof? No. Just an abiding mistrust of government.
However, I am also sure there were people who lamented the demise of
AkSarBen field (airport) and it's transformation into a horse racing
track and auditorium/event arena.
We now have the Quest or Qwest Center, a new ballpark is underway. The
downtown is becoming quite attractive. And the new AkSarBen facilities
are quite nice.
