Discussion:
Rainwater Harvesting Supplies?

Howdy!

Was wondering if anyone in this pond knew of a source for rainwater
harvesting supplies/equipment, such as rain barrels and downspout
diverters. Literally hundreds of gallons of water come off the leaves
over the lily pads and if some of that could be collected and then used
in the garden when the rain stops....

Unfortunately, Mr. Y.B. Dex doesn't seem to have a lot of ideas on this,
and web searching finds spiders and occasional links to faraway places
like Hawaii and even weirder places like Texas.

So if someone knows of a local supplier who handles rainwater recycling,
let us know out here in the swamp!

Capturing rain water for later use is a good idea but I am dubious of the
overall VALUE of such an endeavor.

Methinks that capturing - and reusing - domestic "gray" water would be an
effort with a much bigger payback.

Gray water is that that does NOT go down a toilet. (That is BLACK water.)

RVers have been "into" this scene for decades. Kinky, I know... :)

Capturing and reusing ONLY the water you run down the sink awaiting its
getting hot or fresh and cold would amount to more than you might imagine.

Although some sort of filtration and clarification would probably be needed,
you could even irrigate with waste water from the laundry and dishwasher.

I'll never do it, myself. <sigh>

Our water is too cheap, if that's even possible. No apologies, either.

If I were to capture rain water, I'd DRINK it. ...soft and "pure".

In the farmhouse I grew up on, we had a wooden barrel at the bottom of
our downspouts. Mom washed clothes in rain water.

In the next farmhouse we moved to, all downspouts drained into a cistern
(underground tank) for the same purpose.

Why not start by asking someone like ABC seamless gutters and your
plumber for links?

I tried a quick Google search....
Must be a popular idea still.

Looks like they use plastic barrels or tanks now.
